A Guide to Reading Your Natal Chart

A natal chart looks intimidating at first — circles, glyphs, lines everywhere — but it is built from just four moving parts:

  • Planets — the parts of a person: identity, feelings, drive, love, voice, ambition.
  • Signs — how those parts act and express themselves; their style and tone.
  • Houses — where they show up in life: career, relationships, home, creativity, money.
  • Aspects — how the parts interact: the support, the friction, and the plot twists that shape the story.

A simple reading order: take a planet (what it is), add its sign (how it behaves), then its house (where it plays out), and finally its aspects (how it gets along with the rest of you). Repeat ten times and the chart starts speaking in sentences.

The Big Three: Sun, Moon, and Rising

Start with the big three. Your Sun is your core identity and vitality — the legacy you are trying to build. Your Moon is your emotional engine: what you need to feel safe, how you recover when life starts chewing through the walls. Your rising sign is your social interface: the first impression you make and the lens through which you approach everything new.

Mercury: Mind & Communication

Mercury rules how you think, speak, text, and argue. Its sign sets the tone and speed of your mind — and whether your message lands gracefully or detonates on impact. A natal Mercury retrograde (the ℞ in your table) is read as a mind that drafts internally before publishing.

Venus: Attraction & Taste

Venus is your magnetism — how you love, what you find beautiful, the chemistry you create. It explains why people with identical Sun signs love completely differently, and why certain pairings feel inevitable.

Mars: Drive & Main-Character Energy

Mars rules ambition, competition, desire, and conflict style. A strong Mars placement can mean relentless focus and creative output — or describe exactly how you behave when someone cuts you off in traffic. Beyond Mars, Jupiter and Saturn describe your luck and your lessons, while Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto move slowly and color whole generations — their house positions make them personal.
